I am an editor, writer and photographer with a passion for literary fiction and books that challenge me to think, and as such I can’t resist sharing a good book with others. I have a bachelor’s degree in writing and editing, which developed my understanding of plot and character development, and taught me to appreciate a broader range of writing styles.

I am drawn to books in different ways, by the cover, by good reviews, by praise for debut authors, by the new release of a favourite author, by an unusual story or one told using interesting literary conventions, but more than anything by the author’s ability to compose one great sentence after another, placing commonly used words next to each other in such as way as to bring alive the scene or person they are writing about.

My aim for this blog is to explore the creativity that lies between the covers of good books written by talented authors. I love reading and admire the ability of an author to develop an engaging plot driven by a compelling narrative, to populate that story with life-like characters that I love and loathe, and to create a fictional world that I am drawn into so deeply that the world around me recedes as I consume the words on the page.

My reviews aren’t limited to one particular genre. I like to read contemporary works, classics, fiction and creative non-fiction, and books that draw on real events to tell a story. I hope that you enjoy getting to know more about the books in my bookshelf.

Without writers daring to be creative, life would be dull, blank as an infinitely empty page.

I’ve decided to use a rating system when reviewing books, to give readers an indication of how good a read the book is, in my opinion. Everyone is different, and while I love a book, other readers may hate it, and vice versa. That’s the beauty of books and the reactions they generate in different readers. That said, below is my rating chart for my reviews:

1/5 – loathed it

2/5 – bored me

3/5 – an okay read

4/5 – good solid stuff

5/5 – absolutely brilliant
